Hit 500 laptops cleaned this year and the dust patterns are wild
I keep a simple log for my shop in Austin and just passed 500 laptops cleaned since January. The thing that got me was how many had the exact same dust buildup behind the fan grill, like a thick gray line right down the middle. It's almost always on models from the last two years with those slim side vents. Makes me wonder if the new designs are just worse at pulling air through evenly. Has anyone else seen this specific pattern popping up lately?

Wild. Seen that exact line pattern on a bunch of Dell XPS and HP Envy models lately. Those tiny vents just can't move enough air, so dust piles up in the dead spot behind the grill. Try blowing out the vents with canned air every couple months, before it gets that bad. Really helps the fans last longer.

Guess @fisher.thomas just diagnosed my laptop's new art project.

Totally agree about those tiny vents causing trouble. My old laptop looked just like that until I started hitting it with compressed air every few weeks. Makes a huge difference in how long the thing lasts.

That line pattern fisher.thomas mentioned is exactly what I see most often. It's like the air flow just hits a wall right in the middle of the vent and drops all the dust there. I think a lot of it comes down to how thin these new laptops are. The fans have to spin faster to pull air through those narrow slots, and when dust gets in there it just cakes up in a straight line. A quick blast of canned air every few months before it builds up that thick will save you from having to open the machine later. I also tell people to keep the laptop off soft surfaces like beds or couches, because that just sucks more dust into the vents.
