I stopped charging customers for data recovery, billing for time instead
Used to quote $150 flat for basic HDD recovery jobs back in 2019. Too many times I'd spend 6 hours on a drive and get paid the same as a 20 minute job. Switched to $85 an hour with a 1 hour minimum last spring after a guy in Austin argued my $150 quote for a drive that took me 4 hours. Now nobody complains about the price when they see the time logged. Has anyone else tried flat rate vs hourly for this kind of work?

My last flat-rate job took 6 hours, so now I just bill by the coffee pot.
