I walked through the server room at the new library downtown and saw something that made me rethink my whole cable management approach.

Oh man, that's everywhere. It's like we're all just hiding the mess. My TV stand looks clean from the front, but behind it? Total spaghetti junction of power strips and HDMI cables. Out of sight, out of mind, until it starts a fire.

Seeing that would make anyone rethink things. My buddy found a rat's nest of cables behind his office server that was actually warm to the touch.

Actually, the warmth is normal for a lot of power cables. They get warm from the electricity moving through them, it's just how they work. The real danger sign is if they're hot, not just warm. That means there's too much power or a bad connection. So a warm nest is messy but might be okay. A hot one is a real problem that needs fixing right away.

Ha, nothing like a lukewarm cable nest to make you feel safe. I guess it's just a matter of time before it evolves from "warm" to "dinner is ready" if you leave it alone long enough. Maybe your buddy should just throw a blanket over it and call it a server burrito. At least then it'd have a good reason for being warm.
