Spent $80 on a specific anti-static wrist strap kit after a bad zap

Honestly, it felt like a waste until I used it on a new gaming rig build and saved the motherboard. Anyone have a cheaper brand that works just as well?

Ever get that shock so bad your whole arm goes numb? Happened to me once and I almost threw a part across the room. That $80 feels steep but saving a motherboard makes it worth it. I just use a basic strap that clips to the power supply case, maybe cost ten bucks. The key is actually clipping it to something grounded, not just wearing it.

Yeah the clip is the part people mess up... I've seen folks just wrap the strap around their wrist and think they're safe while building on a wooden table. If that clip isn't on bare metal of a plugged-in PSU case, you might as well not wear it. The numb arm thing is no joke, that static punch can totally make you flinch and drop something.

Read an article that said the expensive kits often just pay for branding and fancy packaging. The basic tech is the same, a conductive strap and a ground wire. As long as it has a real resistor built in, a cheap one does the job.
