Update: customer asked why I keep a spare keyboard on the shelf and it clicked for me
Last week a guy dropped off a Dell at my bench in Boise and watched me swap in a $12 keyboard from the shelf while his original sat there dead. He asked why I do not just order one every time, and I told him I keep 3 of every common part on hand because waiting on shipping kills my turnaround. That night I looked at my ticket log and 9 of my 14 jobs that week were stuck waiting on a part I did not stock. I always thought being lean meant ordering as needed, but sitting on 40 bucks of parts has me finishing same day instead of quoting 3 days out. How do you all decide what to stock versus what to order per job?
