A fire marshal's comment about our slab made me rethink everything

Last week in Columbus, a fire inspector walked our new warehouse pour and asked why we didn't leave a 3 inch gap around the column footings. He said trapped moisture there turns into spalling in about 5 years, and code now flags it in a lot of the newer builds. I've placed a thousand slabs and never once considered that detail. Has anyone else had an inspector point out something that made you change your standard practice?

That gap around footings catches water and rusts the rebar in Columbus winters, seen it happen twice on old pours.
