Old timer told me my trowel pass was too aggressive, 3 months later it clicked

I was on a slab in Tulsa and this retired finisher watched me work for like 10 minutes. He said I was pushing the trowel too hard and too early, messing up the cream. I switched to lighter passes and waited longer between each one, and now my finish comes out way smoother with less patch work. Has anyone else gotten that kind of coaching on trowel pressure, or is it just something you feel out over time?
