Picked a bull float over a fresno on a 1,200 sq ft garage slab in Reno, here's how it turned
Had a garage slab pour 3 weeks ago in Reno, about 1,200 sq ft, and I could only bring one big finishing tool up there. It came down to a bull float or a fresno and I went with the bull float since the mix was running wetter than I wanted. I hit it about 20 minutes after screeding and the bull float kept the surface flat without pulling up a bunch of cream. The fresno would have closed it up faster but I think it would have sealed in too much water on a slab that size. Ended up with one small low spot near the overhead door that I touched up by hand. What do you all grab first on a slab this size, and does it change if the mud shows up stiff?
On an 850 sq ft shop pour in Sparks last summer I went bull float first too, and it was the right call. My mud showed up wet and I hit it right after screed, then followed with a magnesium hand float around the edges about 30 minutes later. The low spot near the door is almost always where the chute dumped, so that's no surprise. When the truck shows up stiff I flip it and grab the fresno first, because you need to close the surface before it sets on you. Wet mix gets the bull float, stiff mix gets the fresno. That rule has not failed me yet.
