Had to pick between two sources for a major story, went with the whistleblower.
Got a tip about a chemical plant cover-up in Toledo. Had to choose between a slick PR packet from the company or a scared ex-employee with a burner phone. I picked the ex-employee. Met him in a parking garage, he gave me internal memos showing they knew about the leak for 6 months. The company's official story fell apart the next day. Anyone else had to make a call like that with zero backup?

Good call, always trust the person with nothing to lose.

Absolutely, that's the only kind of person who will give you the real, unfiltered take. My cousin had zero stake in a family argument last year and told everyone exactly what they needed to hear, no sugar coating. It was brutal but it actually fixed things. People with nothing on the line have a special kind of clarity.

Sounds like your cousin missed their calling as a hostage negotiator.
