I finally fell for a deepfake video last Tuesday in broad daylight

My cousin sent me a clip of our mayor saying he'd resign, and I almost posted it to my neighborhood group before realizing it was AI generated three years ago. How do you stay sharp when even the obvious fakes are getting this good?

Did I just spend an hour yelling at my TV about a fake politician who didn't actually say that?

That whole "you've got to fact-check everything" mindset is bleeding into regular life now... I caught myself double-checking a package delivery notice yesterday because it felt too convenient.

Did I just spend an hour yelling at my TV about a fake politician who didn't actually say that?" Haha oh man I felt that one in my soul. I read this article on Wired last week about how deepfake voices are now just as good as the video part. It said criminals are using them to scam people out of money by pretending to be their bosses on the phone. Honestly it scares me because I already fall for the obvious stuff, like that time I forwarded a chain email about free concert tickets. I guess my only trick now is to slow down and check everything twice before I hit send, even if it looks real at first.
