Went to the Griffith Observatory last weekend and the guy next to me was absolutely convinced the 'dark side of the moon' is where the secret space fleet is built.

oh man, @harris.andrew you're totally right about the far side not being dark, but honestly I think I'd be the one getting the astronomy lesson wrong while trying to sound smart, like I'd probably point at Saturn and call it Jupiter or something. i mean, imagining a secret fleet is way more fun than my brain which can barely remember if Pluto is a planet or not half the time. maybe it's just me but I feel like if I tried to build a spaceship on the moon I'd forget to bring the batteries or something.

Did he mean the far side of the moon? Because that's not dark all the time, it just faces away from Earth. I've read that it gets just as much sunlight as the side we see. The idea of a secret base is fun for movies, but in reality, building a whole fleet there would be pretty hard to hide. I get the urge to just smile and nod like @erickelly said, but sometimes the facts are just as cool as the fiction.

Reminds me of a friend who got into a long chat with a guy at a planetarium about hollow earth theory. He said it was fun to play along for a bit, but after twenty minutes he just had to excuse himself to look at the meteorites. Some ideas are just more about the story than the science.
