BIM coordinator said my laser scanning was 'wasting money,' then the steel showed up 4 inches off
I spent a whole day arguing with our BIM guy in Denver because he thought photogrammetry was good enough for a retrofit job, but when the prefab steel came in last Tuesday and didn't line up with the existing columns, he finally admitted my 3D scanner caught the settlement cracks that his drone missed, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has had to fight the 'cheaper tech is fine' crowd before a mess like this?

The "cheaper tech is fine" crowd got me too once, but honestly I used to be that guy until a scan saved a whole pour. Sucks it took a 4 inch miss to prove your point though.

Feeling that pain right with you. I had a similar miss a few months back and it was the cheapest mistake I ever made, cost me a whole afternoon of work. That cheap tool seemed fine for weeks, then suddenly it wasn't and I paid for it. Now I always double check with a better unit before I commit to anything big. Glad your pour made it out okay, that's the best outcome you could've hoped for.
