Blew $350 on a cheap laser level from Amazon and it drifted within 2 weeks on a job site in Phoenix.

Had to re-shoot all my layout lines after I noticed the beam was off by nearly 3/8 inch across a 40-foot wall - has anyone else had luck with budget lasers holding calibration in the heat?

Same thing happened to me last summer on a job in Tucson. Bought a cheap red beam unit from a big box store and it was dead nuts for one week, then drifted like crazy in the 115 degree heat. Switched to a green beam model from a different brand that had a self leveling feature with a compensator lock. That one held steady for three months straight, even with the sun baking my van all day. What made the biggest difference was keeping it in a cooler when not in use, plus letting it sit in the shade for 20 minutes before powering up. What kind of temps are you dealing with on site right now?

Did the green beam model cost a lot more than the red one, or was it a fair trade off for the reliability? I'm guessing the self leveling feature with the compensator lock is what really saves you, not just the color of the beam. Also, when you say cooler, do you mean like a soft lunch bag or a proper hard-sided one with ice packs, because I've heard mixed things about moisture inside?

The cooler thing is real, just gotta be careful about condensation. I use one of those soft sided lunch bags with a couple frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel, so the laser sits on top and doesn't get wet. Letting it acclimate is the key part you mentioned, that 20 minute wait in the shade before powering up makes a huge difference. The thermal shock from going from 140 degrees in a van to 115 on a slab will mess with the electronics and the compensator, even on the expensive models. Also, the green beam vs red beam debate is legit because green is way easier to see in bright sun, so you're not straining your eyes and second guessing the line all day. But honestly, the self leveling mechanism and the quality of the compensator lock is what separates the junk from the stuff that lasts, not just the beam color or the price tag.
