Man, I feel this in my bones. I ran a whole set of form boards off my old rotary laser before I caught on that the thing was reading about a half inch off over forty feet, and by then we had already poured two slabs. What got me was that it wasn't even the laser itself, it was the tripod settling in the soft dirt after I set it up, so it drifted a hair every time the wind picked up. Spent a whole afternoon rechecking everything with a water level and a string like it was 1985, and sure enough the string was telling the truth the whole time. Now I check the laser against a known elevation every single morning before I trust it for anything, takes two minutes and saves days of grief. Lesson learned the hard way, twice, just like you.
