Overheard a PM say BIM was just 'expensive 3D modeling'

I was on a site meeting last Tuesday and this project manager from Turner Construction said building information modeling is just 'expensive 3D modeling that nobody on the crew uses.' I get that the field guys don't always open the model, but we just caught a $12,000 ductwork clash on a job in Cleveland because the BIM coordinator flagged it before steel got set. If they think it's just pretty pictures, how do you even start that conversation?

That clash savings alone paid for the whole BIM setup.

It only paid for the setup if you were already charging too much to begin with. Half that "savings" is just fixing stuff you should've caught in the model stage anyway.
