That dead laser level on site made me go back to a chalk line
Last Tuesday in Austin, my rotary laser just died mid-pour and I had to finish the slab layout with a $6 chalk line and a tape measure. It actually worked better for the crew since we weren't fighting glare, has anyone else ditched fancy tools for the old stuff when things break?

Sympathize with you completely. Had a total station battery die on me in the middle of a commercial layout last year, ended up doing the whole foundation footprint with a tape, a plumb bob, and some string. Took longer but nobody was squinting through a lens or waiting for a lock. The chalk line gave us clean marks we could actually see in the sun, and the crew just got to work without me fiddling with buttons. Funny how the old tools make you slow down and think.

Exactly, that's the hidden gift of gear dying, nothing beats a chalk line for speed and zero setup time.
