Finally got the hang of single-line boom hoist reeving after 8 years in the game
I used to have to stop and reroute the cable at least twice every time I swapped out a boom section. Last week on a job in Tulsa, I did a full reeving change on a 90-ton Grove in under 20 minutes without a single birdcage. What changed was I started keeping a piece of tape on the lug where the dead end sits so I don't lose my spot. Anyone else got a small habit that saves them time on setup?

20 minutes on a 90-ton Grove, did you time yourself with a stopwatch or just guess?

20 minutes on a 90-ton Grove" - dude, 20 minutes to set that whole thing up? No way. I've run dozens of setups on a 90-ton and you're talking at least 45 minutes minimum just for outriggers, cribbing, and getting the boom pointed the right way. Unless you're counting from when the truck parks to when you're lifting a light load with no jib, that number sounds insane. Not buying it.

Buddy of mine used to brag he could beat any setup time on a 90-ton. First time I watched him he spent ten minutes just digging a tape measure out of a side box that was buried under a month of fast food wrappers. Now he just leaves his tape on the dash like a normal person.
