I totally blew off safety meetings for years until an accident proved me wrong

I always thought the weekly safety meetings at the yard in Houston were just the boss covering his butt. Took my eye off a load for two seconds last October and almost dropped a 12-ton beam on a spotter. The meeting about hand signals I'd ignored actually had a guy describe the exact same near miss. Now I sit front row and take notes like a rookie anyone else go from hating these meetings to actually using the tips?

My cousin ran a crew for 15 years and never sat through a single safety meeting. He bragged about it like it was some badge of honor. Last March he lost two fingers because he skipped the lockout/tagout refresher. The irony is the meeting he blew off had a specific example about the exact machine that got him. He still says it was just bad luck and the meetings are a waste of time. Some people never learn no matter how hard reality hits them.

Honestly @emma_garcia, his story reminds me of the time I left my safety glasses in the truck because I was "too cool" and got a metal shaving stuck in my eyelid. Took me three hours at urgent care while they dug it out with tweezers and I looked like a mess the whole week. Ngl, your cousin is way braver than me for doubling down on the bad luck thing instead of just admitting safety meetings actually work.
