Old timer told me to never grease the wedge socket before assembly

My first crane boss, Rick out of Houston, told me that and I thought he was crazy. Last week I saw a guy do it anyway and the socket slipped right off the cable during a lift. Has anyone else heard this rule get ignored?

You ever see a socket slip like that in person? I used to think old Rick was just being stubborn, that a little grease couldn't hurt. But watching that cable just slide right out of the wedge during a lift, man that changed my mind fast. It's not about the grease making the wedge stick, it's about the socket grabbing the cable tight through friction. A little grease and that whole thing can just let go.

Argue that a tiny bit of grease actually helps the socket seat better and prevents micro-wear, @troychen.

I watched a crane cable fail exactly that way once and never greased a socket again.

@the_holly you’re totally right, once you see it happen it’s hard to unsee. I was on a job where a guy swore by a thin layer of grease on the wedge and socket, said it made seating smoother. Then we had a lift with a 2-ton beam and the cable just started creeping out of the socket during the test load. No full failure, but that slow slip was enough to make everyone stop and change their routine. Dry and clean is the only way now, no shortcuts.
