Pro tip: Mark your boom angle with a paint pen for tight spots

I used to eyeball my boom angle when squeezing between power lines on a job in Austin. After I nearly clipped a line last summer, I started marking 30 and 45 degrees right on the boom with a paint pen. The difference was night and day next time I had to thread through a narrow alley. Has anyone else tried marking angles like that for precision?

If you really think load shift only changes things by an inch or two, have you ever actually measured the difference between empty and maxed out on a 60-foot boom? I watched a guy clip a transformer because his 45 degree mark was off by almost 18 inches once the stick was fully extended and loaded. How much weight were you running when you tested that theory?

Nah, you should never rely on paint marks alone, those lines can shift when you're fully loaded.

Whoa, slow down there. Is this really that big of a deal? I mean yeah, sure, lines can shift a tiny bit when you're loaded down, but we're talking about an inch or two at most. Unless you're parked on a steep hill with a ton of weight, the paint is still a pretty solid guide. Feels like people are just looking for something to worry about sometimes. Honestly, as long as you're not a total disaster at parking, you'll be fine.
