Swapped to a grooved drum on a tower crane last week and night and day difference

I was running a Liebherr with a smooth drum and kept having cable lay issues on the 17th floor hoist. The cable would bunch up on one side no matter how I adjusted the tension. Tried a grooved drum from a different unit we had sitting in the yard and now the cable lays perfect every single lift. Has anyone else found that grooved drums fix a lot of the headache with older hoist systems?

Heard a guy say grooved drums basically fix the kinks in older cable systems.

Actually saw grooved drums make things worse on a 90s install last week.
