That old timer told me to always set the outriggers on cribbing even on flat ground
Been running a 50 ton Grove for about 8 years now, and this old guy I respect at the yard kept saying put down cribbing no matter how flat the lot looks. Last Thursday I skipped it on a paved job site after a rain and one outrigger sank 3 inches into what looked like solid asphalt. Has anyone else had a pad punch through on a surface that seemed fine?

Read somewhere that rain can make hidden soft spots under pavement.

Buddy's driveway caved in last month after three days of rain.

Three days of rain? That's a shocker, I'll tell you. I've seen some soggy ground in my time, but a whole driveway caving in after just three days sounds like there was a lot more going on underneath. Maybe the base wasn't compacted right when they poured it, or there was a old drain tile or something that shifted. Either way, that's a headache nobody needs, especially with the cost of replacing a driveway these days. I can only imagine Buddy's face when he walked out to that mess.
