Appreciation post: The shift from paying rent to building credit history in Phoenix

I used to just pay my landlord cash every month for 3 years straight. No paper trail, no nothing. Then last year I moved into a complex that reports to all three bureaus. After 11 months my credit score jumped 80 points just from on-time rent payments. Why didn't I look for a reporting landlord sooner? Has anyone else seen this kind of boost just from switching where you rent?

Idk man I'd rather have no paper trail than let some landlord track my payments.

Fair point but receipts matter too

yeah I get that @rodriguez.mia, receipts can be annoying but they saved me once. I had a landlord try to say I missed a payment three months back and I just pulled up the bank statement showing the cleared check. That shut them up real quick. What worked for me was keeping everything in a specific folder on my phone, just screenshots of confirmations and dated emails. It's not that hard once you get in the habit. Plus if you ever need to take them to court or something, that paper trail is your best friend. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
