Landlord thank-you note got my deposit back after the 45 day mark

I rented a small house in Tacoma for two years and my landlord kept my $1,400 deposit over a carpet stain I never made. I sent him a handwritten card with photos of the move-in checklist and a simple line about how the furnace broke twice but we fixed the filter ourselves. He called me three days later and said he never reads emails but his wife reads every card. He mailed a check for the full amount plus $50 for my trouble. Has anyone else had luck with old school mail instead of portal messages? I figure it might work again but I don't want to come off as weird.
