Met a guy named Ray at a coffee shop in Tacoma about 8 years ago... he told me he bought his first house with a 580 credit score.

Sounds like a different time for sure. That score wouldn't get you a second look now, probably. Wild how much it's changed.

And my friend had almost the identical experience, actually. He told me his dad got into a decent state school in the 80s with a math score that was barely average (like, think 500 range). Back then, they just took the test once, no prep, and moved on with their lives. Now his nephew is doing the whole song and dance - tutors, practice tests every weekend, the whole nine yards. It's like the test itself isn't the point anymore, it's the arms race around it. Crazy how something so simple turned into this whole industry, you know?

Oh man, this reminds me of my friend's dad. He got into a really good engineering school back in the late 70s with an SAT score that he says was just okay. He told us the story once and we were all shocked. He said he just showed up, took the test once with no prep, and that was that. His exact score would basically be a dealbreaker now for the same program. It's crazy to think about how much the goalposts have moved.

Wait, no prep at all? That's wild, @emma_garcia. The whole game is different now.
