Paid $85 for a credit repair guy in Akron to write letters for me and my score dropped 20 points
So back in January I was desperate to get approved for an apartment and this guy on Facebook promised he could wipe two old collections off my report for $85. Instead he disputed stuff that was actually accurate, the bureaus verified it all in like 3 weeks, and my score went from 588 to 568. The leasing office pulled my report and said I needed a cosigner now. Has anyone actually had luck disputing stuff themselves through the bureau websites, or am I better off just paying the collections directly?
This is the same thing as those weight loss pills and get rich quick courses... people selling hope to folks who are already stressed and broke. The guy took your $85 and did the laziest thing possible, which is just clicking dispute on everything and letting the system sort it out. The thing people don't get is that disputing accurate info was never gonna work, the bureaus just check it against what the creditor says and confirm it. You would've been way better off calling those two collections directly and asking if they'd delete in exchange for payment, because a lot of them will do that. Next time save your money and do the letters yourself if anything's actually wrong, otherwise just pay up.
