Serious question, should I hire a credit repair company or just do it myself?
Honestly I spent like 3 weeks going back and forth on this. My credit tanked after a medical bill went to collections in Austin last year. I was looking at these credit repair places charging $80-$150 a month. Then a buddy told me I could just dispute stuff myself through the CFPB site. I ended up trying it on my own for 2 months. Got two old collections removed and my score went up 40 points. Cost me like 10 hours and a few stamps. But I still have a couple accounts that are a pain. Anyone else find it worth paying someone for the tougher stuff?

I used to think paying someone was a waste of money too, but my situation was a lot like yours and I ended up eating my words when I found a legit company that actually got rid of a stubborn charge off I couldnt fix alone. Spent maybe $200 over a few months and it saved me from the headache of paperwork and back and forth with the credit bureaus. At the end of the day it depends on how much time you got and how sticky the bad stuff is, but for me the pros earned their keep on the harder accounts.

Gotta disagree with you there. Most of what credit repair companies do is just send the same dispute letters you could write yourself, and they charge you monthly for something that takes 15 minutes. If you already got results on your own, you're better off sticking with it and looking up guides for the stubborn stuff rather than handing over cash.
