That one week in March 2023 where my credit jumped 47 points and I finally got approved for a rental

That March 2023 jump is no joke. For me it was February 2022 when I paid off an old medical collection that had been sitting there for years. I called the billing office and asked if they could remove it if I paid the full amount right then, and they actually agreed to delete it from my credit reports. Between that and keeping my credit card utilization under 10% for two months straight, I saw a 52 point bump. It was wild because I had been stuck at like 620 for what felt like forever, and then suddenly I was at 672 and got approved for a decent apartment downtown. The collection thing is worth trying if you have old medical bills hanging around, even if they say they can't remove it sometimes they can.

Got a buddy who went through the exact same thing back in March 2023. He had this old credit card balance he forgot about for like two years, and when he finally paid it off his score jumped almost 60 points overnight. It was mostly the utilization drop that did it for him, kind of like what @colethomas said about keeping cards under 10%. He was so shocked he called me from outside the apartment complex he just got approved for, laughing his ass off. Made me think I should probably check my own credit report more than once a decade.

That March 2023 jump thing is pretty wild. I used to think credit scores were this mysterious black box that just did whatever it wanted, but seeing stories like yours and @johnson.river's buddy makes me realize it's a lot more straightforward than I thought.
