That week last March when my credit took a 40 point dive right before closing on a house

I was two weeks away from closing on a great little bungalow in Tampa. Everything was going smooth until I got an alert from Credit Karma saying my score dropped from 680 to 640 for no reason I could see. Turns out a collections agency I paid off in 2022 had reported the account as active again because they sold it to a new company without telling me. I spent three days on the phone with the original creditor and the new agency trying to get proof of payment. My lender was about to pull out of the deal because the rate lock was expiring. Finally on day five I got a letter from the old agency saying it was their mistake and they would delete the entry. That whole week was a nightmare of faxing documents and calling customer service lines for hours. Has anyone else had a paid off account pop back up at the worst possible time like that?

Did they try to charge you fees too? It’s crazy how they act like you never paid until you dig up old proof. I swear these companies just pass accounts around hoping you’ll give up and pay again.

Honestly, did you notice if that old agency tried to charge you any fees to fix their own mistake too? I had something similar happen with a medical bill from 2019 that got sent to a new collections firm without my knowledge, right as I was refinancing my car loan. Took me a week of riding the phone reps and sending certified mail before they finally sent me a deletion letter. Ngl, it was wild how the new agency kept acting like I had never paid until I showed them the old bank statement.

Oh my gosh YES, the same exact thing happened to me with an old Comcast bill I paid off in 2021! I was so close to getting approved for a car loan and my score dropped by 50 points for no reason. The worst part was the new collections company kept telling me they had never received proof of payment and acted like I was lying until I pulled up old bank statements showing the check cleared. I ended up having to fax the same documents four different times to four different people because they kept losing them. Like seriously, they can sell your debt but they can't keep track of the simplest paperwork? It made me want to scream.
