Update: I was dead set against credit repair companies until my score dropped 40 points overnight

Had a medical bill from a visit back in 2022 somehow get re-reported as a collection last month. Called the hospital three times and got nowhere, so I finally hired a credit repair service that my buddy used. They already got one error removed and my score jumped 22 points in two weeks. Anybody else have luck with these places or am I just getting lucky?

40 points overnight seems like a big jump for one removed error though, makes me wonder how much was already fudged on your report to begin with. @taylor_patel probably got lucky too since these companies mostly just file disputes you could do yourself for free. At the end of the day they only fix stuff that's already wrong, so the real test is whether your score holds steady in a few months.

Haha right? I spent $200 on a credit dispute service last year just to see if they could fix a mistake from an old apartment lease. Turned out the only thing they "fixed" was my bank account balance going down. My score actually dropped 10 points because they opened a new dispute on something that was already cleared up. Honestly I think the best credit hack is just paying your bills on time and hoping the credit gods smile on you.
