I used to think ex-member interviews on YouTube were just bitter people venting, then I watched the NXIVM one from 2020
For years I skipped any doc that was mostly ex-members talking, I figured they were just mad and wanted attention, so I stuck to court docs and news write-ups. Then 3 weeks ago I watched Sarah Edmondson break down the branding ritual on camera, and the details she gave (the exact room, who held her down, what the scar looks like now) matched the trial transcripts word for word. I went back and rewatched 4 more interviews from different groups and started keeping a notebook of names and dates to cross-check against court records. Turns out the pattern talk is way more useful than I thought, the exit stories are where you see the control tactics in action. Anyone got a good channel or long interview that changed how you read a group's story?

Funny thing is I used to skip those videos too, mostly because I assumed they were all just drama channels chasing views, which says more about my lazy click habits than anything. What got me was how much the small stuff lines up, like room layouts and dates, since that's hard to fake and easy to check against court records. So now I'm the guy with a notebook comparing timestamps like a nerd, but it actually works.

Careful, you're one step away from stringing yarn across a corkboard and calling it a hobby. Somewhere a true crime podcaster just felt a chill and doesn't know why. But honestly the notebook thing is lowkey genius because nobody fakes room layouts for fun, that's actual effort. Dates and floor plans don't care about getting clicks, they just sit there being checkable. Next thing you know you'll be color coding it.
