Paid $180 for a cult exit workbook, got more from a free forum thread
Last month my cousin got pulled into one of those online coaching groups that calls itself a family. I bought this pricey workbook from a survivor's website thinking it would show me how to talk her out. Instead it was mostly journal prompts and generic advice. But a random thread on this very board taught me to focus on the specific promises they made her, like the $2,000 a month income guarantee. We went through that together and she started asking questions on her own. Has anyone else had better luck with free community advice than paid resources?

Wait, you paid $180 for a workbook that was basically journal prompts? That's wild. I fell for something similar a few years back with a "digital detox" course that cost way more and taught me nothing I didn't already know. Free forums and Reddit threads have honestly saved my own sister from a pyramid scheme type thing, just by people sharing their real stories and asking the right questions. The trick is that strangers don't have a product to sell, so they just talk straight. That $2,000 promise thing is exactly what pulled my sister out too, once she saw it written down and did the math on how impossible it was. Paid stuff often sounds fancy but free stuff gets real.
