PSA: Those Netflix cult docs keep using the same 3 ex-member talking heads, and I started checking their court records
I got into a habit of pulling up actual court filings after watching 4 of these docuseries back to back in March, and 2 of the featured ex-members in a well known one had their cases thrown out for lack of evidence. The docs never mention that part, which makes me wonder how much of the emotional arc is just editing and mood music. Does anyone else cross check the court records before taking a documentary's timeline at face value?
The part about the cases getting thrown out for lack of evidence is the thing that gets me. I did the same rabbit hole thing last year but with one of those big cat shows, and I found a guy who was on screen for maybe 10 minutes total who had a whole separate lawsuit going that never came up once. The show made him look like just some random witness. Turns out he was suing the main guy for something totally different and it got settled out of court two years before filming even started. The editing made it seem like all these people were on the same page about everything. They cut around so much stuff it's wild. I rewatched one episode after reading the filings and it felt like a completely different show.
