Rant: how cult documentaries used to feel more real back in the VHS days

I remember watching documentaries about Jonestown on a grainy VHS tape my uncle had from a library in Portland back in 1999. Now every new doc on Netflix feels slick and overdramatic with jump cuts and sad music pushing you to feel a certain way. Does anyone else miss the raw unpolished look of those older docs?

...and honestly the fix is simpler than people think. I've archived a bunch of old VHS docs myself by just buying a cheap capture card and adjusting the tracking manually until it looks right. You can still find those tapes for a couple bucks at estate sales and library sales if you are patient.

Funny how we all hoard tools and forget the simple fixes.

Tbh @lucast81 is mostly right but tracking adjustments alone won't fix tapes that have mold or vinegar syndrome.
