Took me 3 hours to realize my 'cult expert' buddy was quoting a movie the whole time
Sat through an entire dinner with my friend breaking down a so-called 'underground group' in Portland, only to catch him describing scenes from The Master when I finally checked my phone. Has anyone else had someone pass off fiction as real cult analysis?

Read a thing last week about how some true crime podcast accidentally debunked themselves by mixing up a real cult with a plot from a TV show. Got me thinking, people are so deep in this stuff they just blend it all together. Your buddy probably heard The Master dialogue and convinced himself it was legit research. Honestly, happens more than you'd think with these niche online rabbit holes.

Bruh my buddy once spent an entire road trip explaining this "secret society" he found online. Turns out he was describing the plot of Far Cry 5 beat for beat. I didn't have the heart to tell him til we got to the hotel.

Feel for you man... I had a buddy who got super into this whole "ancient astronaut" thing and spent a whole weekend trying to convince me the pyramids were built by aliens. Pulled up YouTube videos and everything. After like two hours I realized he was just reciting episodes of Ancient Aliens word for word. I just nodded along and let him have his moment. No way I was gonna pop that bubble on a Saturday.
