David, you're not wrong that it can get confusing when you weren't part of the group. I've been there before with a neighborhood association I joined late. My advice is to ask one of the older members if you can sit down with them for 15 minutes to get a quick rundown on the stuff that matters. Most people are happy to fill you in, especially if they see you're actually trying to learn instead of just guessing. That saved me a ton of head scratching later on.

Honestly David, I kind of get where Amy's coming from. Even if you weren't there from the start, you can still get confused when people keep referencing inside jokes or decisions you missed. Asking someone for a quick catch-up is super helpful, it's not like you're pretending to be an OG or anything.
