A guy at a coffee shop in Austin showed me his phone's lock screen

He said 'I just use a 6-digit PIN, it's fine'... but he had notifications previewing full messages right there. I told him to turn that off in settings, it's like leaving your mail open on the table. Anyone else see simple stuff like that all the time?

Consider how many people have their driver's license or credit card in their phone case. That lock screen shows a full name and often a home town. Pair that with a previewed text about being out of town, and you have handed a stranger the blueprint to steal your mail or worse. The pin becomes pointless when you've already given away the keys.

But how often does that actually happen?

That's a scary thought... makes you realize how much we just trust people not to look. Saw a guy at the coffee shop last week who left his phone on the counter while he went to the bathroom. The screen lit up with a text from his wife saying their flight was at six... right next to his wallet sticking out of his back pocket. Just walked away shaking my head.
