After my email got hacked last month, I switched from using the same password everywhere to a password manager, and the peace of mind is night and day.

I spent 3 hours on the phone with my bank after someone in Phoenix tried to buy $500 worth of stuff with my info, which I'm convinced happened because my old 'favorite pet's name plus 123' formula was on a dozen different sites.

Man, that's rough. So you're totally sure the weak password was the cause of the bank mess? I'm just curious how people trace the breach back to a specific site.

I read about a guy whose reused password from a gaming site got his bank account drained.

My bank's fraud team found the same email and password combo in a data dump from an old forum hack. They showed me the exact breach date from Have I Been Pwned, which matched when I made that forum account. That's how they connected it. What kind of password manager do you use now?

The way I see it that gaming site story is SO common now. People really don't realize how many old accounts they have floating out there with that same password. And the bank thing, yeah the fraud department can literally pull up the data dump and show you the exact login info that was compromised. It's honestly terrifying how easy it is to connect the dots once someone has your email and that one password.
