My sister's stupid wifi question made me rethink password habits
My sister called me from her apartment in Columbus last week asking if she could just use 'password123' for her new router because it was easier to tell her boyfriend. I started lecturing her about brute force attacks but then realized I had been using the same admin password since 2019 on my own router. She asked me why I was so worried about her when my own setup was lazy, and honestly that hit different. Anyone else ever catch themselves giving advice they weren't following themselves, and how did you fix your own weak spots first?
My last router password was literally the street name of my first apartment plus 1984, and I only changed it because my nephew guessed it as a joke at Thanksgiving. What finally worked for me was writing the damn thing down on a sticky note inside a kitchen cabinet, not the router itself, then switching to a passphrase like three random words with a slash in the middle. Takes me ten seconds to type but nobody's guessing "spatula" plus "harbor" plus "pickle" anytime soon. Also stopped telling people to do stuff I wouldnt do myself, which my sister pointed out pretty fast when she visited and saw my old setup.
