My uncle told me to never click 'unsubscribe' on spam emails
He said it just confirms your email is active and you'll get MORE spam. I did it anyway on a fake contest email last month, and my junk folder went from maybe 10 a day to over 50. He was totally right. Has anyone found a safe way to actually stop those emails without clicking anything?

Honestly my old boss just marked everything as spam, which seemed to work okay for him.

Marking everything as spam can backfire. It trains your email's filter to ignore real spam reports over time. Better to set up a couple basic filters like Robert said.

Yeah your uncle is spot on, clicking unsubscribe is basically telling them "hey this address works, send more!" What worked for me was setting up a filter. Like for those fake contest ones, I made a rule that anything with "congratulations" or "you've won" in the subject line just gets deleted right away without even hitting my inbox. Takes a few minutes to set up but it cuts down on so much junk.

That filter idea is smart, but it misses the ones that look totally normal. I've had spam come through disguised as package tracking or receipts. Those still slip past unless you block the whole sender.
