PSA: paid $89 for a 'password manager' app that turned out to be a fake on the app store

I grabbed it in a rush on my phone after seeing 4.7 stars and a clean looking preview. Two weeks later my bank locked my card because of a $300 charge from somewhere in Ohio. Turns out the app was a copy of a real one, same icon and a name with one letter switched. Has anyone found a reliable way to spot these before you hand over your card details?
