Spent 6 hours tracking down a malware redirect that ended up being a rogue Chrome extension

Six hours though... that's a lot of time over a free extension you probably clicked "allow permissions" on without reading. Chrome literally warns you before you install stuff, tells you what access it wants. People just hit "add extension" and then blame the computer when something goes wrong. I keep my extensions down to 3 and check them every month, never had a redirect issue. Maybe the real problem here is clicking "yes" to everything without thinking.

People do this with apps on their phones too. They download some free wallpaper app and give it access to their contacts and camera without a second thought. Then they wonder why they get spam calls or their photos end up on some random server. It's the same pattern everywhere, not just in browsers. We just tap "allow" or "accept" on everything because we're in a hurry and assume it's safe.
