That free password manager my buddy swore by actually caught a phishing email
I figured anyone giving away security software was probably selling my data on the side, but after I clicked a fake "package delivery" link and Bitwarden flat out blocked it on my phone, I had to eat my words. Anyone else get humbled by a free tool doing a better job than the paid stuff?

Get where you're coming from but gotta disagree. Paid stuff like LastPass had that huge breach and still charges you. Bitwarden is open source so anyone can look at the code. That transparency matters more to me than a price tag. I've had it catch sketchy links my antivirus missed. Free doesn't always mean worse.

Wait, you're saying Bitwarden actually caught phishing links your antivirus missed?

LastPass had that breach back in 2022 where they lost encrypted vaults and then a year later someone got in again through a home computer. They still charge $36 a year for something that clearly didn't hold up. Bitwarden's code is literally on GitHub for anyone to check, so if something was shady people would find it quick. The link checker thing has saved me twice from phishing sites that looked legit. Open source stuff forces companies to be honest because hiding bad code is basically impossible when thousands of people can look at it.
