TIL a $20 hardware key beats a free authenticator app for my main email account.
After my phone died and locked me out for 6 hours, I realized the key doesn't rely on a device that can break or get lost, so what other single points of failure should we ditch?

Man, my buddy got locked out of his whole digital life because his password manager went down. He had all his eggs in that one basket and the service had an outage. It really shows you need a backup plan, even for your backups.

Yeah, @troychen, that's why my backup plan is just yelling at my computer.

Wait, he didn't have a single password written down somewhere safe? That's the basic rule of using those managers. You gotta keep a paper copy of your master password and the main email password in a drawer or something. A total outage is scary, but he should have still been able to get into his email on another device to start resetting things.
