Unpopular opinion: my router's default password lasted 6 years and nothing happened
So I finally logged into my home router last month for the first time since I bought it in 2018, and the admin password was still admin/admin. I ran a quick scan of all my connected devices and found 11 gadgets on my network, including a smart fridge my wife set up, and I honestly had no clue most of them existed. Here is the thing though, when I checked my router logs for the past year, I saw maybe 3 failed login attempts total, and two of those were probably me forgetting my own wifi password. My neighbor who works in IT laughed at me and said the real risk is not bored hackers guessing admin/admin, it is old firmware with known bugs that never got patched. I updated the firmware and changed the password that night, and the whole thing took 20 minutes, but part of me wonders if I was ever in real danger or if I just got lucky. Anyone else gone years without touching their router settings and survived, or did I just roll the dice one too many times?
