Warning: I clicked 'Unsubscribe' on a spam email and my inbox got 3x worse
I always figured clicking unsubscribe was the polite thing to do, so every spam email got the same treatment. Two days after I hit that link on a fake shipping notice, I went from about 15 junk emails a day to nearly 50. A friend who works IT in Denver asked me what I did, laughed, and explained that the link just confirms a live human reads that inbox. Now I mark everything as spam and never touch that button. It took a week for things to calm down. Does marking as spam actually work long term, or am I just feeding a different machine?
