I finally checked the unit price on paper towels and my bulk buying habit fell apart
I always grabbed the 12 pack at Costco thinking bigger was cheaper, but a buddy pointed out the per sheet price at the Kroger near me in Boise was actually lower on the 6 pack. Ran the numbers on my phone right there in aisle 7 and felt like a chump, the 12 pack was 40 percent more per sheet. Anyone else got a bulk buy that turned out to be a total dud when they actually did the math?

Oh man I did the exact same thing with laundry pods last year. I was so sure the giant tub from Sam's was the best deal until I actually sat down with a calculator and figured out the cost per load, and the smaller bag at Walmart beat it by like 15 cents every single time. Now I just keep a note on my phone with the unit prices of the stuff I buy every week so I don't get fooled by the big package again. It takes two minutes to check and it's saved me way more than I expected over a few months. The trick is that stores know we assume bigger means cheaper, so they can sneak the price up on the huge sizes and most of us never notice.
