Just realized my parents have been paying $120 a year for a "credit monitoring" service that just emails them ads

My mom showed me the dashboard last visit and it's literally just a list of credit card offers with a green checkmark next to her score. Anyone else have older relatives trapped in these subscription things?

Got my dad out of one of these last year. Showed him how to freeze his credit with the three bureaus for free and set up the free credit score through his bank that updates monthly. He was paying for six months before he even noticed the charges were gone. Still gets the ads but at least now they go straight to junk. You try walking her through freezing her credit yourself?

Actual heads up, freezing your credit is free but you gotta do all three bureaus separately. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion each have their own website and you need separate accounts for each one. My sister tried doing it and froze one thinking it covered everything. Also if she ever needs to apply for something like a phone plan or apartment lease, she has to log back into each one and temporarily lift the freeze. Some banks let you do it through their app now but not all of them.

_@henry_ross is right, don't forget ChexSystems freezes too for bank accounts.
