Paid $47 for a 'lifetime' VPN subscription that lasted 8 months

I saw this deal for a VPN on a random blog and jumped on it because the price was way lower than normal... turns out the company folded after 8 months and now it just won't connect anymore. Lost the whole $47 and the service never really worked during storms anyway. Has anyone else gotten burned by those flash-sale software subscriptions that sound too good to be true?

I hear you but honestly I kinda see it the other way. If I get a solid year out of a $47 gamble that usually fails anyway I'm calling it a win. Most subscriptions cost more than that in two months and you get the same risk of the company screwing you over.

I saw a tech review site say those lifetime deals are just a bet the company stays in business.

Took a gamble on a lifetime VPN deal a few years back and guess who's now the proud owner of a very persistent email newsletter from a company that rebranded twice, @stellat46. Company stayed in business, sure, but it's like they forgot I was a paying customer, not a beta tester. My experience with these deals is you're basically trading your money for a promise, and promises are cheap. Your mileage may vary, but I treat them like buying a printer - you're really in it for the long haul, hoping for no surprises.
