Picked a $20 generic HDMI cable over a $100 Monster one and got roasted

The Monster cable crowd at work said I was crazy for buying the cheap one off Amazon. Hooked it up to my 4K TV in my living room and the picture looks exactly the same to me. Anyone else think the whole premium cable thing is just marketing hype?

Your coworkers are probably just repeating what they heard at Best Buy back in 2008. HDMI is a digital signal so either it works or it doesn't, there's no in between where a fancy cable makes your picture slightly better.

Worked in home theater setups for years and saw this all the time. Monster cables are just dressed up with thicker rubber and gold plating that doesn't really matter for a short run like a living room. Digital signal is either there or it's not, no fuzzy middle ground where a fancy wire cleans things up. Only time you might want a better cable is if you're running 50+ feet through walls where signal degradation becomes a real risk. Your coworkers probably paid $100 for that Monster cable back in the day and are just trying to justify the sunk cost now.

Heard this from a buddy who bought a $40 Monster cable at a garage sale and still swears it's better, @paige166.
